As far as I know: "Alyce" was going to be named either Sheila or Patricia; but Grandmother McDermott suggested she be named after Aunt Alice (Sr. Mary Carmel) who had died the year before Alice's birth I think. The quote from Grandmother McD. (as I was told the story) was: "Why not name her after 'our Alice', then maybe she'll grow up to be saintly like her". (well, THAT didn't happen!)

As for naming the first-born, well, the tradition in the McKendry family seemed to be to name the first son after the father--hence, Grandfather: Thomas McKendry/son Thomas, Jr./HIS son Thomas, III/& his son Thomas "IV"?. JOHN/John, Jr. Joseph/Joseph, Jr. aka "Butch". Uncle Dan had 2 girls (no "Danny" that I know of) Seems like Charles "Bud" broke tradition & named his sons Robert & William.

As for "Gerald": Mother always liked that name & thought it was a STRONG name.

"Michael": I never made the connection that was given for this one, but here's how it was told to me: Michael was born 3 days before Christmas & the boy's name associated with Christmas was "Michael"---maybe the Angel Michael was one of the Christmas "angels" singing Gloria in Excelsious Deo...that would have been a most appropriate naming.

"Timothy": Harking back to our Irish roots, Mother loved the sound of the name & besides, he just "looked" like a Timothy/Timmy. (I remember thinking I had never heard of the name before...but, what did I know @ 7)

"Edward": I think it went something like, "We started with 'John Edward', let's end with 'Edward John'--& when he's Confirmed, he can take the name 'Blase'...that way, if he ever takes to the stage, he can call himself 'Eddie Blaze'".

One more comment about the naming of "Gerald"--how could I forget the fact that Mother's CHOSEN Confirmation name was "GERALDINE". The girl was OBVIOUSLY partial to anything "Gerald-like"!!!

Good stuff AMD, I had no idea. Maybe when little Eddie came along it was such a surprise that they asked YOU to name the next child...they were creatively "tapped out".

Blaze

Actually Timothy was my second, first name. Mother told me that when I was born they called me Philip, after her Father. A nurse asked what my name was and when she was told Philip she said, "what an old man's name for a little baby!" With that, Mother told them to change my name to Timothy, an old Irish name meaning, "he who can hold a sledge hammer at the end of the handle and touch his nose with the head of the hammer without bending his elbow." True story...........well the first part was.

With a a last name like Zee you have to put some thought into these things...

Seana and I decided to go with Liam rather than William because we just did not want him to have to study Roman Numerals to write his name.

We both loved the name Liam and it still maintains the connection with William (like his Daddy and his Great-Grand Pop Bill "Please Don't Call Me Tony" O'Hare).

As for Maeve, we just always loved the name. It is strong, very Irish, but still very feminine. Plus, we get to call her Micky after her Great-Grand-Mom, who I have heard so many wonderful things about.
