It was a Friday afternoon, the Summer of 1960 & I needed sneakers...we were burning ants with a magnifying glass, me and my friends. We were sitting on the front steps... my Mother comes out the front door and says..."Gerry, here's $10.00, go get Sneakers." I had never held a $10.00 bill in my hand before...I said, "Can I get Converse?"..."OK", she said and off we were to COOPERS SPORTING GOODS, smoldering ants in our Wake, for my first pair of Converse!!!... after which I could run faster and jump higher than any other ant burner in the neighborhood...

I also got my first pair of Chuck's in 1960. Unlike older brother, I paid for my own with cash from my tenth birthday. For the one and only time in my life my big feet paid off. The smallest size they sold was a men's 7. My size in the 4th grade! Being the frugal investor I was I bought the rejects for $7.00 and invested the remaining cash in some nickel candy bars I'm sure. Timothy J.
I remember the price being $7.00 ..what a thrill, walking to Coopers and pickin' up a pair and stoppin' at the Rec and "jammin" over Axe on my first drive to the hoop! Yep, that's the way I remember it!
Hey, Commish... there were two guys in your entire zip code that you could run faster and jump higher than... John McK and "Chops".
A little known factoid: The Cooper Bros. paid for the concrete basketball court at B & Olney............that's why you could wear out a pair of Chucks in a day while playing there.
cooker jammin in Converse had to be with Bongo Drums in the basement, with an Axe in hand
I was 37 before I got my first pair of Chuck Taylor Converse All-Stars. Up until that time, Keds and PF Flyers were the sneaker of choice. And they came in Black or White. circa 1994
i got my first pair of chucks in 8th grade. didnt like the way they looked and havent even considered buying a pair since then until they came out with the all black (murdered out as we say in the streets) version in high and low tops. so i have one pair of chucks. low cut all black murdered out
