I saw 94% of his HS games & I can verify those two & more! Longest Homer I saw was @ Methacton HS, he hit one onto Ridge Ave! Overheard two old guys standing next to me say to each other..."What the F***!!!" He was an undiscipled player, struck out a lot...if only Uncle Michael had paid more attention...! LOL! what? I didn't know bazeball!
Either way you spell it, I thought the boy had real "potential"..but I couldn't breakthrough that football brain of his, that Baseball is "the game"...that's the trouble with legs like his...when yer born, people tell ya over and over..."Oh man, football is for you wit dem legs" Coulda been a contender Rocky!! Strong hitter, great arm, great power...he'd still be playin', I swear!
Baseball is a game of tools...Jason had 3 of the 5 tools at 17 yrs.old...by the time he was 19, he's a had 4 tools, with some good coaching...the fifth tool, was "speed"..two kinds, baserunning and quickness...he had quickness, not sure about baserunning tho...he was so coachable, in just 2 yrs in the minors,he would've been more selective at the plate, lower strikouts, opposite field power...goood grief, the possibilities!!
Talk about tools...now Gerry had 2, John had none, Paul had 2, Timmy had 2, Eddie had 3 ...Lookitup! ...now Basketball is something else entirely, the boy could "hoopitup"...that was their game...city boyz ya know... 'cept Timmy, he was the original "Concrete Charlie"...boy was scary strong and faster than anyone realized...
If I may cite Jason's football career at GA...First, he did not want to be at GA. As a Freshman he got into a Varsity game in the 4th quarter and no-one could stop him! He was running roughshod! Two men behind me say, "that kid is good!" Then, one says to the other, "he is, but from what I hear, he can't spell GA" I bit my tongue, Jason left GA & to this day I think he regrets not applying himself while he was there. But, it's GA's loss!! of course, it was the "Interac" so...
To future baseball dads I have to tell you, it IS possible to make your kids left handed batters! Lefties have a natural advantage, i.e. there are fewer Left Handed pitchers! It is impossible to make your kid a Left Handed Pitcher...I tried.
ps...both my kids batted left and now Golf grom the left side...Golf is a whole other thing...
While we are discussing bball we must pause for a minute in memory of one James Walker of Providence College and Detroit Piston fame. He passed this year and left a message for Jack McKendry. It said, "I admire your quickness and tenacity and I loved the way you scored 15 pts against us on an assortment of drives and silky smooth J's. Mike Riordan (Bullets) and I always talked about the incredible game you played against us. You scared the bejeezers out of us. And, oh yeah, you must have been a hell of a baseballer with those powerful arms and quickness you displayed. With those quicksilver hands you had to be a hitter. See ya in heaven. Jimmie"
How about if we have a major sporting event without Referees, Umpires, Judges or Stewards? I Love that a 65 to one shot did ...
