I LOVED IT!

Four "smarter than you are" 30somethings Ace the "Cash Cab" ride questions to their destination! High fiving all-the-way!
  • Ben asks, Double or Nothing?
  • The 30's all say YEA!

The Question...

  • When amateur golfers allow a second chance it is called?
  • The 30's answered
  • "Handicap"

All they ended up with was a Free cab ride and broken Egos...

Point of this post...

  • These 30's are so Cocky!
  • So ready to ridicule us Seniors
  • So unwilling to share their knowledge
  • So impatient when we ask questions about new Technology...

PLUS! I knew the answer!

Sense hostility here? LOL, I tell my 30's that some day they will also have no clue as to how "Modern" things will work when they have gained Seniority...they don't believe me...but they usually try to be patient when answering my questions...

I don't have the foggiest idea how to do things on a computer. I can get the internet, send an email (most of the time), compose and save some letters and sales records. I look at sports and the news (NY Times, Boston Globe, Wash. Post, LA Times, Chicago Sun Times and any other I have an urge for)and I enter Google and ask for something/someone and WALA, I get it. I've got absolutely no idea how that works or who takes the time to enter all the data "at no charge". I keep waitng for some enormous bill to arrive in my life. All in all I like what technology gives me. However, unlike the younguns I know that life goes on without technology. I know the soothing pleasure of solitude and the gift of silence and meditation. For many yrs. I have enjoyed these moments in life. I suspect in the future there will be a radical movement to periodically put away the phones, Bberries, laptops, etc. and bask in the moment. Folks, there is too much information flying around. Check out nature, quiet music like classical jazz or just light classical...once in awhile.
Just know that we mature folks don't actually think we're missing much. I urge the youguns to experience more earthly and contemplative habits and "enjoy your day" even more. Take a walk, sit and listen to your kids, have a nice glass of wine, make a nice brunch and enjoy your partner's company. Sit and count your blessings and remember all those who contributed to your current life. Personally, I have many friends from H.S. /college who have been in heaven for a long time. When I don't feel too 'up' I think of them and all the deceased heroes in Arlington National, etc. who never got a chance to know technology. Just spent a day w/ Lt. Tom McLaughlin USMC, a former roommate. I asked him a million questions about Vietnam. He was an infantry platoon leader and got chills listening to the stories. Then we talked at length about computers and modern technology. He was CEO of Harmon Kardon stereo and travelled the world. We laughed so hard about the internet, e.g., how the hell does it work and who's doing it all??
Talking too much...I think you get my drift. You're right on Pea....

If stoney can go on like that about Technology so can I !
"THE HOW DO IT KNOW JOKE!"
Repoter on the street asks people, "what do you think is the Greatest Invention in your Lifetime?"
the 1st Dude says, the Ipod!
the 2nd Dude says, the Cell Phone!
the 3rd Dude says, The Thermos...

The Reporter asks, why the Thermos?
The Dude responds...
"cause it keep the Hot shit Hot and the Cold shit Cold!"

The Reporter says, "so?"

The Dude asks...

"How do it know?"

My question..."how do they know how to do this Stuff?"

Ok, just finished reading that "Comment"...

Dear Stoney. I agree with everything you said. I work on computers all day. When I get home from work the last thing I want to do is get on the computer. I go to the gym to sculpt my "Guns"... Because, as you may know, Summer is almost here and If The Sun's Out, The Gun's Are Out... But back to computers and technology. I am shocked at how the older generation can't even grasp the basic understanding of computers and cell phones:

Examples:
1.) Not being able to print for two months because the tape covering the ink cartridge has not been peeled off.

2.) Plugging in a laptop to the electrical outlet and thinking the internet is now connected.

3.) Copy and Paste (Too long to explain)

4.) Telling someone to put pictures in a folder and send them to me, only to have that person print the pictures on paper, put them in a "Manilla Folder" and hand them to me... "Umm Hello???"

5.) Windows - What does this mean?

6.) Not understanding you can scroll down and read more of the window.

7.) Right Click (What the hell is that???)

8.) Email Address/Contacts and Saving Phone Numbers into a Cell Phone Phone Book (What's your email???)

These are only a few of many, many issues concerning technology... I will post about this soon. I have to treat the post like my Thesis. I understand it is tough for the older generation. I can honestly say I don't think technology will pass me by. We will get through this. Technology is developed to make things easier! Always remember that.

YoYo: I can cut/paste....as long aa it's on the same page presented. Right click? Why when for whom...needless. I know how to scroll down and then it hits bottom & that's that. Print it out and put in a folder.....make urself clear and always know who you are talking to. Communication is a two/2 way street. For us that's the way to respond to your (presumptive) statement, i.e., put it in a manilla envelope...your way is via stupid computer. Again, know who you are talking to and do they understand what you just said or are you the only one who understands.
Also, how is the human race supposed to establish relationships if we never "hear" each other or "see" each other. There is communcation and clarity in body language. This is a well intentioned blog but the email system is a lazy and horribly limited method of communication. You all think it's so rad but I think it's destructive to human relations. I participate here because after ignoring it for so long I decided that it would be my only communication w/ any neices nephews or sister/brothers on regular basis. In addition you all may very well be reading the blog regularly but it seems to me only the BM's/Dutch participate. The younguns apparently have liitle or NO inclination to move their fingers and participate. Now u know why I ramble on........ Summary, computers are time consuming and playful distractions, though they do provide incredible blobs of knowledge and stimulation. They are also destroying peoples' need to interact and enjoy common interests. like each other. You know, like using a few of our senses to further human relations. (e.g., See each other, Hear each other, Smell each other, etc.). Finis / Ciao

Our family wisemen may be onto something...

To the "30-somethings", remember this quote from Mary Frances: "YOU'LL BE OLD YOURSELF, SOMEDAY!"
(heard that MANY times--& here I am--OLD! Can't believe it actually happened)

I find myself enjoying this computer more and more. I am getting better at it, little by little. Example: following my brother's instructions yesterday, I tried to send a couple music"files" (songs) to him, from a CD I put in the hard drive.. it went pretty easily, i thought, i even sent it to myself...but as soon as i opened it..I could see it didn't work...Don't know why, but different tunes than the ones I sent, showed up! I worked on it for an hour...resending them to myself...no luck...same result...
now, short of calling my brother up and bugging him, I have no idea what went wrong and will prolly try it again today... It is time-consuming and mildly frustrating...but, I still am enjoying the "journey" ...

Dear Yo-Yo 30 something... Thanks for that link which shows the book you suggest. Unfortunately, I cannot get the pages to turn in that book. Is this another "copy and paste" procedure.

Yo ... TechnoCooker! Glad you brought up copying songs to send to friends. Please pass the word: anyone who wants a copy of my Willie Nelson or John Denver 8 track let me know. The have this cool thing now where you can put the real tape in one side and the blank tape in the other side, play the good tape, and end up with a perfect copy of the songs. Then they have this bubble wrap where you put the new tape in the bubble wrap envelope and send it to anyone you select. It took me a little while to master this but I think I have it down now. Pass the word please!!! Need a tape, call the Dutch.

Dutch, if you send me a tape I gotta have a way to play it and I don't. In lieu of a tape send lotsa money.........
