Both cars were classics. You guys were 'stylin' then. Some great stories with both cars, please share. Like Michael's balloon flying story in Timmy's car. Or, the fact that Michael took Timmy's car back to school...why was that?
My gorgeous Chevy Bel Air was a '58 4 door. 33,000 miles on it. No radio ever installed in it. Back seat was bigger than a limo. Top speed I ever had it was 120mph on AC Expwy before I chickened out and got off the gas. $350.00 from Glanzmann's. The car I wanted was a '64 maroon 4 speed on the floor, white convertible, bucket seats Chevy Monza Spyder!
My "consultant" Big Jack thought the 58 would be a better choice. After the fourth or fifth "you might want to think about it again" I caved.
As near as I can recall, it was May / spring 1970 and my roomate and a few friends wanted to see if they could keep their kite aloft,(ok 7 guys in the backseat) whilst I did donuts in the SFC parking lot...as Dennis Hamilton yelled "step on it Mac, it's comin' down", I stepped on that big engine and man it zoomed towards the laundromat and neighboring Frat House (Delta) at warp speed...I almost made the turn, when the CampusCops, in hot pursuit, hit the siren and I hit the bulkhead, guardrail, nicked the laundromat, just missed the kegger going on outside the Delta house and with kite "aloft" and six guys screamin'& pissin' their pants laughin'...I gave those coppers a run for their money! Course there weren't many 58 Chevy's on campus, so within 24 hrs.I was off to the "whooscow" whilst BigJack got his second phone call of the semester...tell ya about the first one, some other time...MAN THAT WAS THE COOLEST CAR I EVER OWNED...TANKS TIM! (Burt Reynolds played "me" in the movie!)
George Rice "Joie" Chitwood (April 14, 1912 - January 3, 1988) "was an American racecar driver and businessman. He is best known as a daredevil in the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show". Cooker referred to himself as Chitwood, I thought I should post a Description of Chitwood to clarify things.
I am Officially "Beside Myself"...I am looking at a Mirror and saying, Timmy's '58 Chevy Died at the USF too? I had NO Clue...I know that an older Brother took my '55 Ford back to USF in 1964 & I never saw it again...but I had never heard that the '58 Chevy was also @ USF, Flying Kites! Tell me the Bel Air made it back to Feltonville...the '55 Ford never di...
No college kid could kill the 58 Bel Air! It returned home with a slight dent on the front license plate area. Front fender weighed a ton.
I believe Cooker got to take the car when I left to defend our country in Ft. Leonard Wood Mo. From Oct '68 to Feb 69. I bought a '71 Super Beetle in Nov 70 and I think Cooker took it back with him after Thanksgiving. My "consultant" came up with that idea too.
The Black Beauty died an ugly death in a tragic fire in NJ after my "consultant" arranged the sale to a pot smoking, non mechanic who replaced the carb and it sprung a leak burst into flames in NJ and as the FD arrived so did a drunk and rammed the car as it went up in flames. A tragic end to a beautiful girl ....
In January 1965, shortly after getting "Hitched", I bought a '64 Chevy Impala, pale yellow (beautiful) for $3215.00 Total price. Best darn car I ever owned.
