and now, something completely different

Frank Mastrangelo was a strong, Italian kid who could really rebound. He wasn't much of a scorer but he always got the ball to the main scorer. Frank became a Philadelphia policeman and in recent years told me to be careful going into downtown Allentown. He tells me he now works in some kind of Philadelphia Drug Enforcement group and Allentown is one of the key areas for drug traffic...lovely. Al Civarelli was the star, 5'10" stud 8th grader on this sqaud. Don't think Al played in high school. Mike Kane was the heady, ball handling, really quick, stereotypical Philly point guard who made this team roll. He did go on to play in high school and eventually became Michael's bro-in-law. Our coach had been All Catholic at Roman. Known as a smooth scorer, he began his coaching career with this team. He once made a talented, shy 6th grader run laps around the court because he wasn't wearing a 'hector protector'. ...and who could forget Steve Przybylinski? Why do I still remember how to spell his name??

The Unis were the "brainchild" of the All American from Roman. I had to get the approval of Fr. Dougherty to go from Blue and Gold to Red and White. He said "If you can get the money to pay for Red and White, I won't stop you". Done Deal. As for the "hector protector" story, I made you run because you had it on backwards over your boxer shorts. Class of
'61 has a short memory. The knee socks were the rage. Ask Gerry West or Rick Barry.

i remember lovin' those knee socks. they were the rage at the time. I felt like Elgin Baylor in 'em. I also remember a big party at Al Civarelli's house when the season was over and Coach D told us he was movin' on. The next season I had Bunky Morton as my coach. He always came to practice in jeans and the sleeves rolled up on his too-small tee shirt. He was a good guy.
