Let's ask Coach Dutch about Bunting...In my opinion, there are two kinds of Bunts...

                                                       DUTCH ?
  1. The Obvious Bunt to advance the Runner...AND...
  2. The Surprise Bunt: a drag bunt or a squeeze bunt, for example.
In both cases I believe the Bunter should not Present Himself as a Bunter! What is the Advantage of a Bunter assuming the Bunter Position when the Pitcher has not even started his "wind-up"?
  • Coach Dutch...can you give us the thinking here ?

Commish, let me answer you succinctly. You are correct. To the uninformed there are 2 kinds of bunts: Sac and Others. With the Sac you must remember your objective is to move the runner. Therefore you must get the ball on the ground in fair territory. Showing bunt from the beginning is acceptable. Remember, showing bunt in this situation allows you to use the old ruse of squaring up and than pulling back to slap the ball thru the charging infielders. Of course there is also the "drag bunt" in which the batter will attempt to drag the ball towards the 1st baseman in order to make that large, lumbering OAF field the ball. Never give this one away. And then we have the squeeze bunt; there is the suicide and the "gotcha" squeeze. In the suicide, the idiot on 3rd base leaves too soon and you must square up immediately and try to get it down, under no circumstance should you take a full swing thereby decapitating the "moron". But beating his brains in after the game is better than being arrested for murder at the scene. When the "gotcha" is in effect make sure to lounge around like everything is cool and then "Spring it". Never let the opposition know it's coming. Remember: once the pitcher sees you intend to bunt, you can expect the "radio ball" to come right at your cranium. Of course if you simply watch Big Jack, Latrish, and Big Jim McVeigh you can never go wrong. Unless of course that "idiot" on 3rd breaks too soon. Pea, if you would like to schedule a seminar on "The art of the squeeze bunt" let me know and I will have my agent contact you.

The "Mick", Whitey...just to name a few of the great ballplayers who used the bunt as a weapon to get a hit...not to sacrifice, but to"drag" one down the line...a beautiful thing to see...loved this kind of bunt! Even used it a few times back in the early 60's...course ya hadda get permission first!

When you're a HR hitter they NEVER give you the belt for bunt sign. That'd be like using a Cadillac to haul trash; just ain't done my friend. Thus, I can not speak from a first person narrative on this subject.

Now if you're talking goin deep, call ME.

Sincerely,
