October 23, 2012
It has been one month since we gathered for our lovely sister’s lunch, somewhere between Mechanicsburg and Allentown. I was thinking this morning, as I drove in to work (remember when you had jobs?), that there was a discussion among the women that they wanted to get together on a regular basis. I’m not sure if the men were going to be invited to those gatherings but I know that we can be a pretty interesting bunch so, I had a thought.

I would like to propose an idea where we get together on some kind of regular schedule (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly) and at each session one person (or couple) is responsible for giving an informative presentation on the topic of their choice. Here are a few details:

·         We put together a schedule (bi-monthly) where each of us hosts the gathering.

·         A simple, informal meal of some kind is shared

·         Beverages are shared and conversation is had

·        At each session one person (or a couple) is assigned to make a presentation on a topic of his/her/their choosing. The subject is completely up to the presenter. It can be on “anything” but the presentation must be at least 20 minutes long. Following the presentation, we can have a discussion on the subject or go back to the food and drink.

·          What would you want to talk about?

o   A silk-screening demonstration

o   The zone press – does anyone use it anymore?

o   The thrill of coaching girls basketball

o   The history of SEPTA

o   A book/movie review

o   My years as a Philadelphia police officer

o   A vacation/trip?

o   … any subject is a good subject

·         As I get older, my quest for knowledge is growing. Who better to inform me than my siblings and family?  I ask for your support on this idea (it is political season).

·         We’ll need a name for these sessions…
Thoughts?

I'm IN and I offer my place for the first "Session". My Presentation will be..."How I can't figure out how to get my many computer Photos on a Slide Show or Video & place them on my Blog or Facebook!"

AS you suggest in your Post Blaze, I suggest we call the Sessions "The Gathering". In my mind once a Month may be too much (nothing personal) but maybe once a quarter would be better...

I have a few thoughts about this:

1-The Gathering sounds too mundane
2-Gerry's idea is like herding butterflies. 1 keyboard 10 people.
Plus he just wants somebody to teach HIM!
3-I take it that the presenter should have some subject knowledge
4-We need a high brow name,The D St. Philosophical Society or sumpin
5-Quarterly
6-The time should be 20 minutes OR LESS (Trust me I know a few of these folks and they can go on and on and on and...)
7-MOST IMPORTANTLY, Michael and Gerry can not make eye contact. Everytime they do they CRACK ME UP!

quarterly works for me too. Susan has already expressed her opinion (Negative) but I think it would add a dimension to our family. Yes, visual aids are encouraged, anything to help you tell your story. 20 minutes is also fine with me. If we are all riveted, for some reason, we can extend the time.

We need to hear from others before we go ahead.

I propose the following topics:

Michael-Power Point presentation of his many surgical scars and then we can play Connect the Dots.

Paul- How I REALLY Got My Crooked Nose

Alyce- How to Bake a 30 Pound Irish Soda Bread.

Mary-An audio presentation of the K, J and R bus stops in geographical sequence from Pratt Street west.

Susan-The Art of hanging cool family photos and finding wacky dogs

Maureen-The Zen of Plumbing & Heating customer service and how it relates to EVERYTHING!

John-How to win friends in the granite industry

Gerry-How to read lips in a dark limo while looking in a rear view mirror.

Eddie-The People I Know.
