OWL story & Uncle Pea: recently I had conversation w Coach Dan Dougherty...who? Well Dan played at St. Joseph's U. after serving 3 yrs. in US Air Force and was a backcourt teammate of, ironically, Mike Fallon who was my first h.s. coach @ Cardinal Dougherty Prep, home of scholars & jocks (not exactly the same), BTW: 1st time I saw a Palestra game they were the guards vs. Albright College on a sat. night/Dad directed traffic so I got in free & sat in 3rd/4th row behind SJU bench/a THRILL. Anyway,Dan coached as ass't coach Villanova (pre Pea), West Point Head coach (my hs teammate & co-captain Ed Hockenbury Boston College / Bob Cousy, was his brother-in-law and ass't coach for approx. 10 yrs. They succeeded Bob Knight.). Continnnuuuuiiinng, Pea later was offered/accepted & screwed out of a full ride to Nova by Jack Kraft/George Raveling. Dan was gone by then. Don't you know @ West Point they were permitted to pick one Army soldier to serve as an ass't coach. Dan, having coached him at Malvern Prep chose Fran Dunphy who was serving in US Army and about to head to Ol' Viet Nam......Instead, fate, luck ,good fortune, Divine Intercession interceded and Fran was assigned to West Point and befriended a young officer named Mike Krycewski....starting a long term friendship/influence in 'Dunph's' life. He later coached at LaSalle U. and then Temple U. where he is now. Every time I see him in my bball travels he asks, "how is Gerry?". You see, he played at LaSalle U. at same time Gerry started at LaSalle the first time and he always said Gerry would've played there except Gerry decided to go in the US Army to fight the Gooks in VN instead. Well, that's one story but the other one is he went kicking & screaming.

So, why tell this story? Coincidence, fate, luck, whatever it is....some have it and some missed it....I was just thinking be/ Dan Doc told me the story. He & Eddie Hock were eventually replaced at West Point and he returned to Episcopal Academy to teach Math & coach bball for a very long time. He coached Gerald Henderson & Wayne Ellington, two current NBA veterans. Eddie Hock coached at Norwich U., VT and is in heaven. His son Eddie Jr. is Ass't AD @ Vermont U., Burlington VT and I visited last October (Princeton grad/baseball in Angels minor leagues). Fran Dunphy, a very nice humble gentleman is long time successful coach @ Temple U. ($1 mill/yr+) & now being pressured subtly by alums/press to "get on with life". Moral of the story, Nothing stays the same and in life fate/luck or chance sometimes "trump's" good planning or diligence. Pea writes a blog, photograph's birds, cooks culinary delights, critics/comments on all sujects and consumes right wing propaganda & historical military/spy novels. Jack Kraft is in heaven with George Raveling (the two screwees), Joe Crews (who they chose in Peas place out of Bishop McDevitt HS and Staunton Military Acad./6'5"), instead of Pea, is a Nova grad. and the rests is historical trivia......"Now...you know....the rest of the story". Good day. Paul Harvey

PS: In an effort to change the blog subject the above was written with well meaning intentions. Life goes on and on.....thankfully. G'day.

The editor/proof reader isn't awake and yes, I know, I misssspelled critique and subjects....so, mea culpa mea maxima culpa.....Go Gonzaga!!!! Did I tell you about the time I had breakfast, 1 on 1 , with Coach Dean Smith for 1 1/2 hrs. and we talked full court presses, late game strategy and other topics and I asked him every 15 mins. "uhhh, you have any openings for a 'work for free' assistant coach"? No? Uhhh some other time. It's tourney time, the best & worst time of the year......
