Wow!!!!!! JW would be a megastar in any era.... Story: I've met a man who played for St. Joe's U. who was known to be a great defensive player, Joe Spratt (major, Physics/Chemistry). and is a close friend of Uncle Gerry's HS coach, Jack Pergolin. Joe guarded Jerry West intheh NCAA tourney and held JW to about 6 pts. thru 3 quarters (there's a great photo of JW attempting a jump shot and Joe's hand is on top of the ball...he has that photo and I've seen it). Anyway, as the game progresses (in West VA) Joe gets called for 2, 3 , 4 fouls in late 3rd & 4th quarter. Game goes into OT and he fouls out. As I remember it, I listened on radio in our kitchen, WVA goes on to beat SJU in two ot's and Jerry West scored about 25 pts., most coming after Joe Spratt fouled out. Later, in his book, JW mentions SJU and says, 'they had a guy who could play defense better than anybody I faced." Loved Jerry West! 'Zeke from Cabin Creek', dirt poor family....read his book, ggod read. As is John Stockton...BTW: looking for my copy but can't remember who I loaned it to.....if you, please let me know, anybody? anybody?
