...when it came to Sports. We were never invited to "The States" tournaments. We never even heard about them so we did not care about them. Catholics played vs Catholics; Publics played vs Publics,
regardless of the Sport.
At the end of each seasons sport the Publics played vs the Catholics & whatever Team Won was
City Champions! (I now understand things have changed for the better)
Absolutely nobody I knew back then had a clue about this thing called "States"
I now live in Lancaster County. District, Section & L-L League Crowns are very important.
And so far the Warwick High girls track team is doing well.
Today in the early morning (like 9AM?) downpour the Warwick 4 by 800 Team beat four other Teams to make it to the afternoon Finals!
(Dierdra is on the far right)
(the 800 by 4 means that each runner runs around the track twice & hands off a baton to the next runner who runs around the track twice, 4 runners do this)
Six hours later the 4 by 800 Team beat another four Teams to win the whole darn Track Meet!
So Mother Molly (who was at the Meet) posted that
* Dierdra's Team won Section 1 & L-L
* to capture the District Triple A Team Title
* With 73 Points
* and they now Qualify for States!
That's great stuff!
I really wish I knew what all the jargon means...

States are a very Big Deal in PIAA. Like the NCAA tourney, you play, win, and keep going til they give you a big trophy. Way to go Dierdra.
Another story: Former Harrisburg Bishop Joe Mcfadden was, at one time, Principal of Cardinal Ohara HS and formerly bball coach at West Catholic HS, also. Once he talked to me about the PIAA and whether the Catholic should join. He asked if there was good competition. I told him, yes, you must join the PIAA but be prepared to be surprised and get your butts kicked in several sports. he laughed and asked, "are you serious?. I told him that many schools in the state have much better facilities and better coaching than you've seen in the Catholic league. He said there was a lot of opposition in the CL to joining. I told him they should be opposed because their snobbery would be crushed if they join. They joined and the first couple years my predictions came true. The PIAA championship is a great honor.
Congratulations, Dierdra! I know States is a very big deal..Good Luck, in your States run!
