Some history about alchohol consumption in Pennsylvania

From 1971 to 1973 I worked part time in a Pa State Store.
The store was located on 5th street in Olney right accross
from Zaph's Music Store.

Back then a customer would walk up to the 15' counter
and ask for what they wanted...and we walked back & got it for them.

A lot of customers asked for Johnnie Walker Red.
It did not come in a box back then, but it did come in pints.

At times we would have a customer that would ask about wine.
In 1971 I had never had a taste of wine! They would ask, I'm having
a dinner party, what wine would you recommend for
chicken cordon blue!

My manager told me when it comes to wine & meat, "If the meat
is white, it's a white wine. If the meat is dark, it's a red wine"
Just pick a white one or a Red one & don't ask so many questions!

I had a woman come in who knew what she wanted.
She wanted two bottles of Ripple...I went & got the Ripple
& told her that would be $1.70...this was 1971.

She got angry! $1.70 she asked. That's .85 cents a bottle!
"My girlfriend brought this wine to our dinner party & I wanted
to thank her! Are you sure it's only .85cents?"

I just nodded & asked her, who is the other bottle for?

This was 1973!
