Paul McCartney dines in Basking Ridge, NJ
Former Beatle visits the Blue Cafe
International music superstar Paul McCartney paid a surprise visit to town last Friday, dining at the Blue Cafe at 60 South Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge.
“Sir Paul McCartney and his wife Nancy was (sic) today at Blue Cafe,’’ the business posted on its Facebook page. “Talking to the local legend was an amazing experience.’’
On Tuesday, Dec. 20, Barbara Chutnik said that McCartney and his wife entered the cafe shortly before 1 p.m., when the seats were about 80 percent full, and picked up a menu at the counter.
Chutnik, who was working at the counter, said she looked at the man and thought he looked like McCartney. When she recognized Shevell, “I put two together” and realized who it was.
“I said, ‘Hi.’ Do you live in this area?” she recalled.
Shevell then asked her to “Keep it low” and mentioned that they had wanted to wear protective masks but chose not to.
Chutnik assured them they would not be bothered. They were seated at the counter, which was empty, and ordered takeout food. The order consisted of go-to Greek salad with no chicken, pear salad, an egg-and-cheese sandwich and cappuccino coffee.
McCartney and Shevell waited at the counter for 15 to 20 minutes before getting their food and departing.
During that time, the couple conversed with all the baristas, Chutnik said. “He was the nicest guy ever. He wanted to talk to the employees, he asked how the business was going.”
McCartney related that he and his wife had just visited a local museum, and the host recommended that they try the Blue Cafe.
Seeing the former Beatle in person was quite an experience, Chutnik said.
“I was nervous, I was shaking,” she said. “It was out of this world. I’m not star-struck but the energy that came with him was absolutely different. ‘Oh my God, the legend is here.’ I’ve seen stars at airports and restaurants but with this it was different.”
