Before most Phillies games I do my "research" on the opponents starting pitchers. I know, it's sort of a "dorky" think to do but I'm into it... Ever since Al Gore invented the internet, information is so easy to gather. Thanks Al, this one's to you... Anyway, I figured I would share my results on Friday's opponent, Cory Luebke.
On Friday night the Phillies play against the San Diego Padres. In case you haven't noticed, here in Philly, we are going through a little bit of a HEAT WAVE. The temperature is supposed to be above 100 degrees for Fridays game against the Padres.
Cole Hamels faces off against rookie Cory Luebke. It's neat to know this stuff so I thought I would share.
Cory Robert Luebke: (born March 4, 1985 in Maria Stein, Ohio) is a professional baseball player for the San Diego Padres. He attended the Marion Local High School and The Ohio State University. He was pick number 63 in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.
In 2008 (While Cole Hamels was winning a World Series MVP) Luebke started the season with the Class-A Advanced Lake Elsinore Storm, but was later sent down to the Class-A Fort Wayne Wizards. Luebke went a combined 6-9 with 100 strikeouts with a 5.12 ERA in 1281⁄3 innings pitched.
He split the 2009 season with the Class-A Advanced Lake Elsinore Storm and the Double-A San Antonio Missions. Luebke pitched for Team USA in the 2009 Baseball World Cup.[3] He threw a near perfect game against Team Canada.[4] He started the championship game, striking out seven and pitching 41⁄3 innings.[5][6]
On Sunday, July 11, 2010; Luebke was promoted to the Triple-A Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League. He was promoted to the Padres on September 1, 2010 and made his first major league start on September 3, where he got his first loss, pitching 5 innings and giving up four runs. He earned his first career win in his next start, throwing 6 innings and only giving up 2 hits and 1 walk.
In June 2011, Luebke was promoted to the Padres starting rotation. NOW he is facing Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies. How long will he last? Will he throw a gem? Will the heat get to him? Interesting stuff, remember what you read while you are watching Friday's game.
Toot-a-loo...
