Alyce's Restaurant...you may want to lower the volume here... and just read my story
For many many years I have always thought of this song on Thanksgiving Day.
If I don't play it out loud (on the radio), I sing it in my head on the last Thursday in November. Can you name another song that has a Thanksgiving theme? Without a gobble-gobble in it?
I believe the song came out in 1967. I was in the Army at the time and guys would play it constantly. Everywhere I went the song was played. Ahemmm, the song makes fun of guys
that were in the Army at the time.
So when I left the Army & found myself in Sea Isle City in the summer of 1970 living with a Rock & Roll Band, and a 14 year old little brother that sorta was cool, I took the little bro to a shore house party. I said, Eddie, just play that Arlo Guthrie thing & let me do the rest. I knew all the words, the
14 year old knew all the chords and we mesmorized the Crowd. Actually, I think they were all
under the weather (stoned) or tired (drunk) cause we heard nothing from the attendees. So me and my bro slipped silently into the night.
I took Eddie in my Impala to a custard stand for a van/choc swirl on a sugar cone...a sugar cone!
Reason I bring this up is 'cause I just saw Arlo Guthrie on a PBS fund raiser on Thanksgiving night.
Is there anything more annoying on TV than a PBS Fundraiser? and an old guy? still making money off of a song he wrote nearly 50 years ago & still spewing Liberal Crap?!?

How about if we have a major sporting event without Referees, Umpires, Judges or Stewards? I Love that a 65 to one shot did ...

I love that you brought this up, Pea...I remember, so well, you performing this song..and I loved it then and I would love to see you do it again, sometime..
as for the tune, itself..we have a tradition in our house, too...We tune in the radio every thanksgiving, at noontime, and listen attentively, for the 20mins or so, that it takes to play this song. It takes me back, everytime..I love it!
I don't remember that gig GPea. Nice of you to let your youngest brother follow you around though.
I just listened to this song again. I'm guessing it was 1970 when I last heard the whole tune... maybe we need to record YOU singing this?
